Brooks tells the story of Mr. March, absent from Little Women because he is "far away, where the fighting was," during the first part of the Civil...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Great writing. A very creative backstory for Little Women that stands on it's own. ”

The main character is very principled but fails to see what is really important, which principled people sometimes do. Another fine book by the author of People of the Book.”

The story of the four little women was familiar to me, but this is the story of their remarkable absent father and his journey through a very troubled time in history. It shows the cruelty of war on both sides, the courage of many, the strong bond between a couple who are separated by that war, and especially the unrecognised sacrifice the women/mothers had to make while their men went to fight for freedom and equality.
A "must read"!”
“Mr. March - father of the "Little Women" - narrates this book set primarily during the Civil War.
I liked it because it takes a well-known story and fills in details. Also because it's not as saccharin as "Little Women."”
“Old language, startlingly visual passages. A saga of the civil war as told by the father of Little Women. Enjoyable, yet as with most other war sagas I have read, the experiences lose their wow factor after a few and the story becomes a tad tedious. I guess I am not a real history buff otherwise I am sure I would have eaten this up.”
