“Outstanding Goodis character-study/thriller focusing on the title character and his conflicted relationship with the 21-year-old woman he raised after her father--his mentor in thievery--died. She's both an albatross to him and someone for whom he feels desires he can't bring himself to act on. It's not as deliciously twisted as some of Jim Thompson's 1950s stuff, but it's still tasty, with a darker ending than the 1957 movie that cast Dan Duryea and Jaybe Mansfield in the leads.”
