Set against the backdrop of England's civil war this story reads and feels much like the first novel. A very good sequel that stands up well to the first novel. Like the first one there are parts that drag due to the dated writing style. The storyline and characters are still very good. Recommended”

Is it as good as the original? Probably not, but I’ll be darned if it isn’t really good nonetheless. The characters are older, and not quite as spry, and their friendships have frayed just a bit (Dumas, that great writer of adventures who never met a historical event he couldn’t exaggerate or tweak for the sake of drama, nonetheless snuck in some sly, and rather accurate, comments about the course of friendship over time), but the fun is still there. ”
“I could read Dumas until my eyes rot out. This book is the continuation of the Three Musketeers cycle of books, which is so cryptically named that I still have a hard time saying what order they come in!”
