Eli is 9 years old as he is rushed into a nuclear bunker by his father. They would have to spend the next 15 years there with his mother and two sisters. His twin brother and grand----mother couldn't make it to the bunker in time. The bunker is a secret underground bunker that is a palace with everything that you could every imagine, yet everyone but Eli's father hates it. The first seven years go by with Eli blaming himself for his brother not making it. Eli is the only one in the compound to still work out and stay fit. He likes basketball and dislikes his sisters.
One day Eli walks into his brother's room for the first time where he sees that his brothers laptop is charged. His father had switched Eli's computer a long time ago for an upgrade. Eli opened the laptop to find of all things he was connected to the internet. He can't believe it. Soon after his father walks in and takes the laptop from him saying that it was too out of date. This is where Eli begins to distrust his father. Eli sneaks into his father's room and connects to the internet again to once again get connected to the internet; but this time his IM user name says the following friends are online: Twinyan1.
His brother Eddy who was alive? His Dad had lied to him and his sisters and mother. There was no nuclear bomb. It was all a test to see if the bunker would work. The rest of the world thought the people inside the bunker were dead. His father tries to stop the family from leaving and even tries to kill them. However Eli got the door opened early so the hidden bombs inside the compound begin their timer. Now Eli and his father run back inside, Eli gets the rest of the family and they escape. His father's fate is unknown-he may have escaped or died; it is unclear which. The book has a happy ending with the family being saved minus his father who fate is unknown!
