The stakes get higher for Mara this time as she has to contend apart from her usual coterie of adversaries, the Great One, the magicians of Tsurani to ensure the survival of her line.
While I felt at the beginning of the book, this was a third book written for the sake of a third book, towards the end, the book ties up the loose ends of the previous books. While the pace of the book suffers due to the length of the book, it is still a fast read for most parts and Feist again does a great job of exploring the Tsurani and Midkemian cultures and Mara's increasing attempts to distill the best of both the cultures.”
“Mistress of the Empire is a great ending to the trilogy, That not only ties up the loose endings but adds a lot more suprises and new characters probably the best book of the trilogy it is amazing how feist and wurts keep bringing on adding to an already great series of books and improving them”

This book is the best of the series (the series is also very good in its own right), eclipsing all the surprises in the previous book. Just when you thought that Feist & Wurst couldn't possibly come up with more ideas, they proceeded to prove everyone wrong with the plot in this book. The most fascinating part of the entire story is the way the culture is structured, and how it's described and portrayed but the authors. For the past 10 years, I've asked for more sequels to this series... :)”

The focus was not so much on the magic (as opposed to the Riftwar Saga), but rather on politics and psychology and a plot that twists delightfully up to the last moment.
Very strong and rich characterization - you get to know the characters as if they were your next-door neighbors. Hmmm, you might even know them MORE than your next-door neighbors. ;-)
The third book in the series starts with a shocker...and keeps us in its grip all the way to the end.”
