This is the only Alice you need. If you ever wondered what the author meant by that, or what peculiar circumstance he was referring to, it is in here. This includes the political situations and persons of his time, all the things we don't get. And, because they are side by side with his text, we aren't always hunting for footnotes.
After all, who can read Alice without getting curious?

This book is quite baffling to me. Yes, I know it's a great children's classic, but I couldn't help but feel the author was simply tripping out when he wrote it.

The version I read and possess as a treasure was published by Norton and the Intro/notes were done by Martin Gardner and the original illustrations are by John Tenniel. It has the cover that is shown on my shelf. It a "lap size" book, much bigger than a trade paperback but not really a coffee -table book. Hope that helps. James S.
