“ Man, what I wouldn’t give for a Jewish grandmother. There are a ton, A TON of Yiddish words in this book. I kibitzed while trying to read this book (I don’t even know what that means).
It’s a good book. Not as good as Kavalier and Clay, but damn good. It took me a bit longer to care about the characters, but there it was, that same old feeling. Oh Michael Chabon, why can’t you write every book (that will sit on my bookshelf for a few months before I get around to reading them...more Man, what I wouldn’t give for a Jewish grandmother. Oh Michael Chabon, why can’t you write every book (that will sit on my bookshelf for a few months before I get around to reading them… then of course it takes me awhile to muddle through the books… the man uses big words. Not the biggest, but I’ll admit- I might have to look at a dictionary on occasion when reading his books).
RANDOM THOUGHTS: It made me want to go to Alaska for some reason. It made me want to sleep with a red-head. I still think I can beat a bear in a fair fight. ”
“From the titile, I expected a more light-hearted book, however, this dark tale of Jewish policemen in Sitka, Alaska at the turn of the century quickly grabbed me. ”

A slow start, because it takes a while to get used to. I wouldn't recommend just picking up this book. Its pretty important to get some background info first. The characters were hard to pick up at first, but once you got to know them they became pretty well developed. I'm excited to see how the Coen Brothers will treat the movie adaptation of this.”

Yes | No“This is set in Sitka, Alaska, and in this story, there is a large Jewish population living there. There was a murder investigation, a divorced policeman whose ex-wife becomes his supervisor, and I’m not sure what all else happened.
My mind wandered and I just didn’t find much interesting in this book. There were a lot of characters I couldn’t seem to get straight and I think a lot of Jewish references went way over my head. I just wasn’t interested enough to really pay attention to what I was reading, and as a result, I really don’t even know much of what happened. I did like the ex-wife character and the banter between her and her ex-husband. Beyond that, I was just reading to get through it and most of what I read wasn’t sticking. ”
“i really enjoyed this just for the original approach to a controversial topic and extremely entertaining.”

I almost gave up reading... just couldn’t get into it somehow. But I kept going and to my surprise ended up liking the book looking back from the finish line... if that makes sense to anyone.”
