Actually I'd like to award a 3 1/2. I loved the language but interest in the story faded near the ending. Came out politically preachy. Would have appreciated a glossary for the Yiddish references. Interesting characters: Landsman and Berko.

I love Michael Chabon and this is his best novel, in my opinion. I especially love the relationship between the main character and his ex-wife; Mr. Chabon truly knows how to write about marriage, in all it's beauty and pain.

My version had a glossary in the back that proved invaluable during reading.

Fascinating combination of adjectives, English and Yiddish. Chabon has an amazing imagination. Highly recommend.

A hard read...some Yiddish would help allot. I did not finish it...too self-important for my taste.

A mystery with a twist. Be sure to look at the glossary at the back of the book and familiarize yourself with the Yiddish words and expressions before you start reading. I loved this whole premise and the main characters.

this was my 2nd Chabon book and it did not let me down after reading Kavalier & Klay - this was humorous, well-researched and such a FUN read.
    Highly recommended

I was expecting a comedy given the title...this is a rather dark mystery.

Michael Chabon is an incredibly gifted writer. His ability to put words together is amazing, and as I read this book I frequently found myself admiring the beauty of his narrative. This particular story is highly entertaining - imagine a detective novel with a Klezmer soundtrack. I recommend it highly!

Strange, but enjoyable read! You have to stick with this one, it isn't easy to understand all the hasidic jewish behavior/traditions, but it is very intriguing in the end. I struggled with it, but enjoyed itin the end. Pretty crazy premise!
