“This is the first book I read by Truman Capote. It is about a young boy who goes to live with his dying father in an isolated place in the deep south. The characters he lives with and meets are really strange, grotesque. The mansion where he stays is a vestige of a once-glorious South, and it is deteriorating just as the characters are on a steep decline. Thus it is a genre of Southern Gothic. Capote's writing style is mysterious, haunting and beautiful. I really want to read more by him. ”

This is supposed to be a very innovative first novel from a great "new" author. I think the main innovation is the fact of the openly homosexual character, which I imagine was bold and adventurous at the time. This resulted, in my opinion, in this book being overrated.
It is mildly interesting and has a hypnotic sort of mindset that typifies southern gothic style. It is not, however, breathtaking or mindblowing. Kind of average.”
“This book is so haunting 40 years or more since I first read it, I feel like it was a dream I had last night. He hit something deep, scary and true. Not much better in fiction according to me.”

The characters are very interesting individually but in combination they create a terrific synergy. I tried to read it without thinking about Capote as a person, treating the main character as though he weren't the author's alter ego, and I think that's the best way to enjoy this novel. Not that I didn't like Capote, what little I know of him, he was one of my favorites on television and I'm sorry for the way he hit that downward spiral, so for me seeing the young character through fresh eyes helped quite a bit.”

Not my favorite, but maybe the best Southern Gothic transvestite novel ever written. More successful as a piece of personal publicity (with an infamously pedophiliac jacket photo of the author) than as a novel. ”

It's ghostly and sullen - just like the boy on its cover. It's not nearly the best of his work, but it'll be a long time before a young author breaks into the scene with such a moving novel. ”
