This book is just great at portraying the feel of a dark time and place.

This book is a must read for all! It was very enlightening and I could not put it down. There are many lessons learned by both the characters and the readers. I will let you find out for yourselves what I am talking about.

Well this book was a break from the norm for me. It was about a young black man in the South accused of a murder that he didnt committ......go figure, which took place ohh I think in the 50' or 60' cant remember. The language in which it was spoken kinda made it hard to flow for me. The gist is that a teacher was propositioned to make this boy behing bars become a man....to make him feel essentially that he was/is someone before he dies. It was worth reading.

Didn't feel like much went on. The story was fine and I understand the cultural and historical aspects that are being described, but maybe my emotions have become stagnant without more shock.

A good book. I like how simple it was in concept and delivery, and yet the devil was in the details (in a good way) with this story. Little things made this book really good, and it was easy to understand while still providing serious food for thought. The characters seemed real and powerful without being too idealized, and a couple of parts brought me to tears in the same way that a sunset or a child will make you cry.
