“I laughed out loud!”
“Would a non-academic find this book funny?I've just finished this book and it was hilarious and very painfully true.I wonder, though, if I only find it so funny b/c I am in academia. Any ideas? ”
“Academic book group? I am thinking of starting a book group here on Shelfari about books that are set in academic/university/campus life. What do you think of this idea? If you like the idea, can you give a suggestion for the name of the group? I was thinking of something catchy, like "Academic Angst" or something like that. ”
“I just finished it also for our book club (it was our Humor selection). I didn't care for it, even though I could see others liking it, and I'm not academia. Sal”
“I found the book funny both times I read it. I'm not in academia, you don't have to be to enjoy the premise. I'm not a tail gunner and I enjoy military books. I have known guys like the hero. They're in every walk of life. He's cynical and in this book I like him. If I knew him in real life I'm not so sure I would like him much though.”
“I'd love to join! Why not call it something like The Ivory Tower or Behind the Ivy? Count me in regardless... L)”
“It's a good idea, since academia is a world of its own. I like your suggested name.I'm not a good prospective group member, since my recreational computer time is sporadic. But I wouldn't rule it out. My candidates for academic books include Moo, Straight Man, The Human Stain, and Expecting Adam. Wonder Boys was a great movie based on a novel, although I never read the book. I'm sure there are many more, and I'd like to hear about them. - Anne ”
“Great idea. I love academic settings--worked in higher ed for 27 years. LOVED Straight Man (oh how true it really is).”
