This is one of my favorite Joe Leaphorn books. The culture, history, landscape are as facinating as the mystery.

Listening Woman is definitely one of my favorite Tony Hillerman books.
This book not only gives a reader insight into the spiritual lives of the Navajo and a history lesson, it keeps you on the edge.
Joe Leaphorn has never been better in this story. He is nearly killed by a jerk in a fancy car. The jerk is wearing gold rim glasses.
He tracks this jerk in an effort to find the murderer of an old man and a young girl. Joe meets a priest and girl that is chasing the priest in a romantic relationship. It turns out to be the little rich girl Joe is supposed to find and protectl. Joe ends up cornered in a small cave by a huge vicious dog. The creep can't get to him so he tries to burn Joe alive. The cavern narrows out to a small space that allows Joe to survive and Joes swears to kill the jerk. Joe meets up with the dog and only quick thinking saves him. The jerk throws dynamite at Joe but doesn't quite kill him. Joe is really pissed now. In his escape, Joe discovers this group claiming to be a militant Indian group is really led by the greedy jerk that is in it strictly for the money. They have kidnapped boy scouts and leaders to be used for hostages and get money. The priest sacrifices his life to save the hostages and give Joe Leaphorn the chance to rescue the rest. There is a bomb ready to go off and bury everyone. Fantastic Joe Leaphorn novel.

This was a fine story, but a bit difficult to pay attention to while driving in unknown territory. My attention doesn't stretch that far. The reader was less than perfect, especially his interpretation of the females, but certainly not grating.
Mr. Hillerman again dishes up a great story in the mythical setting of the Navajo reservation. Joe Leaphorn is presented with several events which make no sense to him and must sort them out. A wild man tries to kill him for no reason. A helicopter disappears. An old man and a young woman are murdered for no apparent reason. A priest comes to live in his grandfather's home. A troop of Boy Scouts are kidnapped. Leaphorn must untangle these threads before anyone else, including himself, is hurt.
