And smoked and bought shares in cars, apparently. Who buys half a car? Anyhow, Eleanor Vance, the shy, lonesome protagonist, has been taking care of her...” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“I'm not sure I was this book's target audience. Nothing about it dragged me into the fear the characters were feeling, nor the encroaching insanity. It wasn't a bad book, but not one I'll read again.” see full review » see other reviews » |

A pretty creepy read... but upon a closer look I don't think the house has anything wrong with it. I think the visitors are the ones causing all the problems.”

In the meanwhile u are left with characters who are weird and are prone to all sorts of weird wise cracks, and hard to digest 'uncommon' reactions...grrrr....this book totally drove me nuts!!
It is typically the sort of book u just keep reading, hoping that something interesting will happen, and it never does finally occur!!!
Steer clear of this book. I personally love English classics and grew up reading them. This is the first and worst classic i have read!!”
“This book is going to be scary!”

It was better, but I still didn't particularly care for it. It seemed to plod along with not a lot of anything happening for the first half of the book. And finally when things did happen, it was rather a let down. Still, it was reasonably entertaining.”

Deliberately vague as to time and place, Jackson refuses to do the work of the reader by explaining or confirming the actual nature of the events that occur. Instead, she offers ambiguous and surreal accounts of nightmarish happenings from the perspective of a young woman who appears to be suffering from an increasingly disturbing psychological disorder. As the tale unfolds, questions continue to arise that are left tantalizingly unanswered. Perhaps Jackson’s greatest narrative skill, however, lies in her ability to capture the heartbreaking loneliness of those who perceive themselves to be outsiders, longing desperately for a place to belong.

“I couldn't sleep while reading this. I would be up all night with the lights on, jumping at every sound, thinking my house was going to turn on me. Fun time. ”

I read this in my Jr. High English class; it was an introduction to foreshadowing and symbolism. Great book - but I couldn't read it right before bed! Very scary. ”
