Lightning-struck sleuth Harper Connelly and her stepbrother Tolliver take a break from looking for the dead to visit the two little girls they both think of as sisters. But, as always happens when they travel to Texas, memories of their horrible childhood resurface.

To make matters worse, Tolliver learns from his older brother that their father is out of jail and trying to reestablish contact with other family members. Tolliver wants no part of the man- but he may not have a choice in the matter.

Soon, family secrets ensnare them both, as Harper finally discovers what happened to her missing sister, Cameron, so many years before.

  • Harper Connelly: Thin and dark haired. Dark gray eyes.
  • Tolliver Lang: Thin and dark haired. His eyes are brown. Tolliver’s complexion is pitted and scarred from acne, because his dad didn’t think of sending him to a dermatologist.
  • Mark Lang: Tolliver’s brother, they have the same cheekbones, the same chin, the same brown eyes. But Mark is shorter, thicker, and not nearly as smart as Tolliver.
  • Iona: Harper's aunt. Pleasantly rounded, and her hair is graying in a pretty way, as though her light brown hair was simply fading a little. Her eyes are dark gray,
  • Manfred Bernardo: Xyelda's grandson, who is telepathic.
  • Matthew Lang: Tolliver's father. Harper's stepfather.
  • Gracie: Harper and Tolliver's sister, the youngest in the Connoly-Lang family.
  • Cameron Connelly: Harper's sister, who has been missing for eight years.
  • Lizzie Joyce: Rich woman who hires Harper to tell her how her grandfather died.
  • Chip Moseley: Manager of the Joyce ranch and Lizzie's lover.
  • Drexell Joyce: 'Drex' Joyce is Lizzie's brother.
