“This is one of my all-time favorite books. As a matter-of-fact, it's been years since I've read it and have to do so again. Intense, heart-wrenching, infinitely readable & characters that will live with you long after you've closed the back cover.”see full review » see other reviews »

“Literally the worst book I have ever picked up, and I read a chapter of Shopaholic. This author has clearly never heard of Occam's Razor.”see full review » see other reviews »
“The Piper family is a history of violence, love, and incest from Cape Breton to New York. I looked forward to this book but the long drawn out retelling of relationships did me in, caused me to disengage, and forced me to finish for the sake of finishing. I couldn’t identify with any of the characters except for Trixie the cat who seemed the sanest of all. I see no compelling reason for it to be on The List. Alistair MacLeod’s No Great Mischief would be far better book about Cape Bretoners. ”Shelley S wrote this review 6 days ago. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No

“I started to read this book expecting that the reading will be long and unpleasant. First surprise was how fast I was turning page after page, sinking deeper and deeper into the Pipers’ life. I would say that Ms MacDonald is able to create the world very real, horrible but believable.
About unpleasant – reading about such a dysfunctional family, with the most terrible secrets closed behind the doors and buried under the stones in the garden is not a pleasant experience but I could not put the book down (the second surprise)!
And I admit that it is much more enjoyable to read about such an accomplished father like Atticus in Harper Lee’s book but I am totally aware that the world is not always sunny and positive. Such families like the Pipers exist and MacDonald was able to portray it in a perfect way, showing the problems from different points of view, giving every member of the family a chance to tell his or her part of the story.”
“I really liked this book - not for the story but for the writing. Telling the stories of four sisters, this novel spans generations and gives an intimate picture of one family from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Dealing with some difficult themes, there is a feeling of hope pervading and I loved how the writer was able to express herself. ”Sashinka wrote this review 11 days ago. “It doesn't matter how well written a book is to me if the author needs to drag you through the gutter to get her point across. This book is melodrama. It is one horrific event after another. There really aren't any great surprises in this book; just imagine the worst and that is what happens. It only gets 3 stars because the writing is exceptional; just hated the story. ”Lynsey wrote this review 12 days ago. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
