This is one of my all-time favorite books. As a matter-of-fact, it's been years since I've read it and have to do so again. Intense, heart-wrenching, infinitely readable & characters that will live with you long after you've closed the back cover.

I bought this book in hardcover and then avoided reading it for a long time: it seemed too long, too depressing, too familiar in its tale of abuse. And then one day I picked it up and started reading. I barely stopped, devouring the book in three-day readathon with short breaks for food, water and sleep! MacDonald's complex characters, poetic language and gripping historical tale is a pleasure. Yes, it deals with some tough subjects and themes--but boy, is the ride ever worth it.

I've read thousands of books over the years and I'd have to say this is in my top 5. Predicated on the authors love of secrets its a page turner that will leave you drop jawed at the end.

Set in Nova Scotia's Cape Breton, this is a saga of a family - the good and much of the bad. Very vivid pictures of the time and place.

Very strange and depressing as I find most of the Oprah books. The troden woman, the abuse from men!

I thought this book was kind of garbage. It took me the entire summer to get through it. Maybe I didn't understand all the themes and layers well enough to appreciate it but all in all I just plain did not appreciate the story.

Sad, sad and more sad. Don't read unless you want to read a sad story. It was good writing, and characterization, but man, sad.

Forget Oprah, this is a Canadian classic. It's a big complex book about family and sexuality and what comes from the past and tastes like the molasses cookies my grandma used to make. I read it all in one day by a fire, wrapped up in her blanket.

I read this book in university for an English course and I remember having to put it down every so often because it was literally painful to read. It left me feeling almost sorrowful when I put it down, and yet somehow I couldn't help picking it back up again.
