If you have read Young Adult Novel and Chicago Days, Hoboken Nights then this may sound familiar. It is still worth reading for Pinkwater fans, but if you are short on time jump straight to his new pair of YA novels The Yggesy and The Neddiad.

This is a very humorous book about a young boy named Robert Nifkin who enters a new school called Riverview High. He realizes that this school is very against communism and pornography and all they do everyday is copy notes from the board. It's a very dirty and uncomfortable enviornment for Robert. His father, who is an immigrant and carries an accent which makes the book that much funnier, believes that his son is absolutely fine in Riverview and shouldn't transfer out. The whole book is like a wake up call for the main character. I though it was a fun book to read because it kept me laughing at most of the parts.

This book reminded me of the same desperate humor as produced by Allan Sherman. I laughed and laughed, and wished I could play chess. And then stopped wishing I played chess.
