Opinion:...” see full review » see other reviews » |

I particularly enjoy the spunky and smart female protagonist, something often not in children's books.” see full review » see other reviews » |

Things have been this way for as long as any of its citizens remember, but now the city is running dangerously low on supplies and there have been an increasing amount of blackouts. Twelve-year-old Lina finds old, badly damaged instructions that describe how to evacuate the city. Lina and her friend Doon must decipher the instructions if they want to save the people of Ember. This book is lively and descriptive. The main characters’ personalities are distinct and well-drawn. The reader will enjoy gradually learning about the secrets of Ember. There is nothing particularly scary about this book, so it would be suitable for younger children to adults. The ending sets up for the next installment in the series. ”

Everyone is in a mysterious underground city, and the power, food, and lights are failing. No one knows what to do, and two kids have to figure it all out. It's very well-written, scary, but lots of adventure, and the end sets up an interesting opportunity for the sequel.”
