Facts: The City of Ember is the first "book of Ember" and will become a full length film on October 10th 2008. I have heard from a trusted advisor that books two and three are unnecessary and that the first book should be left alone as a complete story. From what I hear, she is right. Opinion: Somehow, though this book takes place in the small city of Ember until the very end and is written in a simple, modern style, it kept my attention well. I enjoyed it more during the read than looking back, but over all, in a nutshell it was pretty good. I hope that the movie is too. The Plot: Twelve year olds (though they seem older) Doon and Lina are schoolmates but aren't friends until after asignment day when all the twelve year olds are asigned jobs. Lina gets pipeworker and Doon gets messenger. After trading, they are both satisfied. Why? Lina loves the idea of running around Ember in a red jacket delivering messages by mouth and Doon wants to explore beneath the city where the river runs and the genorator is located. He wants to investigate the mystery of electricity. Ember is lit by street lights but beyond that their is only "the unknown" and darkness. There is no sun, no stars etc. The electricity comes from the genorator which is run by the river, that is all they know. The city was built by "the builders" and the builders left supplies and special instructions. The Instructions were given to the mayor in a box set to unlock in a certain matter of years and was meant to be passed down from one mayor to the next and so on. Well, one nutty mayor tries to break it open too soon and then, in frustration, tosses it into his closet before dying. Unfortunately, he had told no one about the secret box and there it lies for years...too many years. It unlocks in solitude until one day Lina finds it again. Is it too late to save Ember's people? When the mayor seems to become the root of the problem, Doon and Lina team up to shed light on Ember's past.

In ember things are just falling apart; the light is running and their food is coming down to a low minimum. So teenagers Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow will try to find a way to get out and save their city. Its always dark in Ember, no moon, no sun, and no stars. Ember lives in the dark pretty much. They are surrounded by a circular darkness.

Lina and Doon eventually find a way out of Ember, with Poppy(Lina's Siter) but sadly Lina's grandmother passed away. Lina and Doon never told anyone about the escape they had planned, but once they reached "the new world" they found a book that explained what the old world was like, they had everything we have now.

What they find in this new world shocked them. They find a cave as they went through that cave they found a hole, and thorugh that hole they saw a city below and that city was surrounded by blackness, what they saw was Ember...underground. All this time

The City of Ember is in grave danger. It's lights are starting to go out, and no one realizes it-except Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow. Although this story has a great sense of friendship, it's ideas were a little low.

City of Ember by Jean Duprau is a great fantasy adventure of a girl and a boy who find a way out of their struggling city. Ember is a city build underground in a cave, but to these people its the only population they know. When they find the instructions to the way out of the city no one belives them so they go out there selves. City of Ember was a good book that left you hanging a lot, I liked it.

City of Ember is a captivating tale about an underground city called Ember. A group of people known as the Builders constructed the city to preserve the human race. The Builders gave Ember a timeline of 200 years and then a box would open up and there would be instructions for how to leave the city. But one of the mayors was less than honorable and the box was lost to them.

The story starts out after the box has opened and the city is starting to crumble around the people. Lina and Doon must find a way to save their city from devastation. Can they find the way out in time?

This is a wonderfully illuminating tale of courage of two young adults. It is hard to put down.
