“The People of Sparks is the continuation of The City of Ember. The people emerge from underground where they have lived for years. The surface is different and the people find it difficult to survive. Food is scarce and the people do not know what to do. Soon riots and vandalism break out.”Harding Reading 635 wrote this review Sunday, December 9, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“The People of Sparks is the second volume in the Books of Ember series by Jeanne DuPrau, and I enjoyed reading it quite a lot. It picks up almost immediately after the end of the first book and recounts the emergence and subsequent adventures of the people of Ember, the city hidden under the ground to escape the disasters that virtually level the world above. The people find this new world both amazing and terrifying, and need to rely on the help of an aboveground settlement called Sparks to survive.
As one might expect, tensions quickly grows between the two groups as the weeks progress, with each side convinced that the others are treating them unfairly. Thrust into the midst of these rapidly deteriorating relations, the main characters Lina and Doon must decide whose side they are on and how, if at all, peace can be maintained.
This is a very good examination of conflict, war, and peace for children and young teen readers alike. As a more mature reader I found the storyline rather obvious in places, and the ending seemed a bit too tidy. Still, the points that are made and the subjects that are discussed--including a brief bit about non-violent resistance--are valuable topics that every young reader should encounter. Rated 3 stars out of 5.”

“This was a great book. I love how the author was able to write the book with such rising action! This book was able to show how two completely different groups of people were able to live with each other... after having war! Lina and Doon have done it again in this book!”Bill Sternbach 701 wrote this review Friday, October 5, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“I am a fan of this series but the one thing i don't like is that you have to read the next book right away in this series and i am learning that the hard way because i have read the city of ember a long time ago and i do not understand what is going on and who is this person and who is that but other than that it is a great series so far. ”5S Arman wrote this review Tuesday, October 2, 2012.
