The Cat Who Had 60 Whiskers

by Lilian Jackson Braun

After dropping a bombshell that was a bestseller, Lilian Jackson Braun brings back James Qwilleran and his famous felines, Koko and Yum Yum, for the twenty-ninth installment of the beloved, bestselling Cat Who . . . series.

Moose County, 400 miles north of everywhere, is in an uproar (good and bad) following vast inheritances from wealthy old families. Only "Cool Koko" knows what's... (read more)

For some reason I just couldn't get into this one. I found the writing sloppier than in any of the other books of the series. And I know Braun has to put a little background in each book for those who are just popping into the series but, in the case of this installation, it came out sounding redudant to anyone who already knew about Moose County and its residents but probably wouldn't have been enough revelation for someone who didn't. I guess that's my long-winded way of saying the formula went a little stale.

And, even though this series has very devoted readers who will buy and read each book out of habit and loyalty I cannot stress enough that the editing should still be as slick and thoughtful as it would be for any new imprint. In the case of this book, there were parts that didn't flow, words that were used two and three times on the same page (in ways that stood out, obviously, not just normal linguistics) and a plot that, overall, needed a LOT more tweaking than it was given.

I love the series and I love the author but I beg her not to overestimate my devotion. I can make a clean break if I have to. If the writing doesn't go back to the way it started there will be no reason for me to keep buying these books.

SUMMARY: There are many changes in Moose County. A new senior social is being built, residents are auditioning for a production of Cats, and Qwill’s friend Polly is going to Paris and may not return. Nathan Ledfield’s mansion is also being converted into a museum, until a mysterious death from a bee sting occurs there.

As time goes on, honestly, these books get more and more inane. However, I will not, and cannot miss one of them. I enjoy them as wonderful and light little mysteries. I wish someone would build a model of that lovely apple barn!

Love the "Cat" series. Never hard reading, very entertaining. Sometimes your brain needs a break after reading something deep.

The Cat Who Had 60 Whiskers is a very good book and it is written in retribution of someone taking her cat and throwing it from the 13th floor of an apartment complex just because it was a cat hater. I on the other hand love cats and don't see how anyone could kill an animal or even abuse them for that matter. Lilian Jackson Braun is a very good author.

So many unanswered questions. Death, fire, Dear John... I'm hoping the next book The Cat Who Smelled Smoke will clear everything up.

As the other readers say, this book was disappointing. So was the last one. There have been three mysterious deaths between them and none of them were solved let alone investigated. It's like she's trying to add new characters while getting rid of old ones but there's no continuity. I'll keep reading but hope the books improve. Koko and Yum Yum deserve better.
