Brooks started off wonderfully with a compelling narrator who chronicles the hardships of living in her tiny, quarantined village during a resurgence of the Plague in 1666. The narrator is a strong woman trying to survive continued loss of family and friends. Lots of detail about life in a small village in 1665.”

“A fascinating story of the effect of the plague of 1666 on a small English village. It's about the conflict between those who saw the plague as the judgement of a wrathful God and those who tried to understand its cause and course by observation. ”

“I read this book in preparation for a rtrip to the Passion Play in Oberammergau next year. It gave a realistic look at what living through the plague must've been like in the 1660's. Difficult subject, but luminous writing. ”
