Gotta love Felix's moves. He's a honey of a vampire private eye.
He is after the murderer of a porn star. Then the porn star who hired him is missing and presumed dead. Felix heads to LA to search out the alive and not so much....

Fast paced, easy read. A little light on some character development, but overall enjoyable. Despite the title, there are no X-rated scenes in this book. LOL. But it takes the vampire mythos and lends an interesting edge to it.

This is the second book in the Felix Gomez series, but for some reason, I didn't find it quite as entertaining as the first. A lot of the ridiculousness of some of the situations, that I found so amusing in the first book were missing from this second book.

In similar vein to book 1, Felix Gomez, still a private eye, has now been called to Los Angeles to investigate the death of porn star Roxy Bronze. Upon arriving in LA however, he finds that the person who visited his office only the day before to hire him, one Ms. Katz Meow, has joined the ranks of the missing herself. But Felix has been given a secondary, and perhaps even more important, assignment while in LA. The Araneum, the governing force of the Vampires, has asked him to look into suspected collusion between vampires and humans, since it's forbidden for the vampires to reveal their true identity to any human other than those who provide them blood, conveniently called chalices.

I definitely liked this book enough to want to read the 3rd in the series, [a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/0060833289?tag=cheriepie-20" target="_blank"]The Undead Kama Sutra[/a], which was just released this past March. I only hope that this series doesn't begin to take the "sequel spiral". I'd prefer to see it get better instead. ;)

Felix Gomez, vampire PI, is back in another mind-blowing, action-packed, whodunit. You may remember Felix from Acevedo's first book, "The Nymphos of Rocky Flats". If not, run out and find yourself a copy of that little gem - you won't be sorry.

Felix is hired by Katz Meow to investigate the death of her fellow adult film star and friend, Roxy Bronze. The murder happened in Los Angelos, so Felix must travel there to start his investigation. It picks up in a hurry when he can't locate his client, Katz Meow, putting him on the trail with only a contact name, Coyote. Turns out he's a fellow vamp and a strange one at that - he obviously has a lot in common with his namesake, Coyote, aka The Trickster.

The case is not the simple murder Felix was led to believe. There is an obvious cover-up by the cops, Roxy's sleazy ex-husband, her soon-to-be ex-boss (she was going into business for herself), the leader of the vampires in LA, and a shady evangelist all thrown into the mix of suspects. Then there's Roxy's sister, a person that several seem to be unaware of. Add in a potential love interest for Felix, one who just happens to be human, and it's a crazy ride with several red herrings.

What makes Felix great is his humanity - he screws up with the best of them. And Acevedo doesn't let on to you, the reader, what's going on, so you feel like you're sitting there with Felix trying to navigate the twists and turns of the case. It's fast-paced action but not at the expense of character development, something you don't always see in thrillers. I'm eager to pick up the next Felix Gomez case - here's hoping Acevedo doesn't keep me waiting long!

In 2006, Mario Acevedo introduced us to Felix Gomez, soldier vampire turned private investigator, in The Nymphos of Rocky Flats. Felix solved the mystery of the nymphos using his supernatural powers, and in 2007, he returns in X-Rated Blood Suckers, the sequel.

Still a private investigator, Felix’s services have been sought out by porn actress Katz Meow. Katz needs Felix to find the murderer of her friend and fellow porn star, Roxy Bronze, and she’s willing to pay a hefty fee if he’ll take the case. When he realizes he has personal ties to Roxy, his interest in the case is piqued. When the governing body of vampires, the Araneum, lets him know--in no uncertain terms--that he will take the case because they suspect vampire-human collusion, he hops on a plane for Los Angeles.

When Felix arrives, he discovers that Katz Meow has disappeared. According to her employer, porn producer Cragnow Vissoom, she never showed up for work, which is out of character for Katz. Vissoom is also the leader of the Los Angeles vampire nidus and is the main suspect the Araneum sent Felix to investigate. Felix knows there is more to the story than Vissoom is revealing.

As Felix begins interviewing suspects, it becomes evident that Roxy had plenty of enemies with motives for murder. The suspect list keeps getting longer and the bodies are piling up. Crime lords, politicians, doctors, porn kings, evangelists, chalices—everyone he encounters seems to be linked to one another and have ties to Roxy. It’s baffling, even for the most experienced of supernatural detectives.

The story of X-Rated Blood Suckers is possibly more intricate than The Nymphos of Rocky Flats. Acevedo manages to introduce a host of characters without convoluting the plot and distracting the reader. A love interest provides some inner turmoil for Felix as he wrestles back his human emotions because of his damnation into the world of blood suckers.

Possibly the most delightful aspect is the addition of Felix’s partner-in-crime, Coyote. Coyote is an elusive ancient vampire with a penchant for rat meat. With his mysterious talents, he darts in and out of Felix’s life with privileged information that helps the investigation. Despite his irritation, Felix becomes quite attached to his friend. Coyote could be characterized as the comic relief, but the whole of the novel is hilarious on its own. Together, the two friends face the most dangerous adversary of all: humans.

X-Rated Blood Suckers is Mario Acevedo’s second novel. Visit his website at www.MarioAcevedo.com and his blog at www.biting-edge.blogspot.com.
