if you've read bukowski before you may be looking forward to this one. i read some poems and Hot water music (the latter i really enjoyed) but this one is just a let down. here is bukowski/protagonist just doing the usual tinbeating and loudmouthing. more pricks than kicks. the worst part is when he tries to caricature hollywood folk - werner herzog becomes 'wenner zergog'. that's really preteen shit.
i couldn't go through more than two chapters.

I detect a calmer, gentler Bukowski in this one. Gone are the bar alley fights and womanizing found in earlier novels such as FACTOTUM, WOMEN, and POST OFFICE. Mind you not Buk's alter-ego Chinaski still is a daily heavy-duty drinker and horse player, but there are signs of slowing down. HOLLYWOOD, like his other novels is simple to read, but gets you in the gut with is brutal honesty. A must read for any Bukowski fan and should be enjoyable for a casual reader, too.

All about his experiences making "Barfly" with Rourke. A few very well written moments, but not his best (read Notes...). LOVE BARFLY. Rourke was so damn good looking!

Hollywood is good stuff. Same old Buk despite the fact that this time he is married to Sarah and thus not getting as much. This is an older Hank, very reflective. This novel is all about the script he wrote for Hollywood movie makers. Is this the real story behind Barfly. I never thought that early mickey rourke was a good fit to play old Hank, he was too pretty. These days, he would be perfect for it. But this is not about Barfly, it is about Bukowski's Hollywood, a novel that any of us fans would enjoy.

Not the greatest read but Bukowski is blunt and as honest as they come - dig it.
