Post Office

by Charles Bukowski

"It began as a mistake." By middle age, Henry Chinaski has lost more than twelve years of his life to the U.S. Postal Service. In a world where his three true, bitter pleasures are women, booze, and racetrack betting, he somehow drags his hangover out of bed every dawn to lug waterlogged mailbags up mud-soaked mountains, outsmart vicious guard dogs, and pray to survive the day-to-day... This book goes down easy, like booze. Funny and educational. Find out why so many people were going 'Postal' back in the day.

Can the Post Office possibly be the way he describes? I don't know, but this book is good fun to read. A little too "relationships mean nothing and I have no sentimental attachment to anyone" for my taste, but I rated it high because I tore through it.

Read it to arrive at the final pages, which are sublime, beautiful, grotesque mess.

Charles Bukowski isn't for the weak at heart.... his writing is considered crass, by some. Don't know why he clicks for me. Maybe he appeals to my crass side. This novel is often described as really funny, but much of it is sad, to me. I also love Bukowski's poetry, which never fails to delight and surprise me.

I LOVED this book! It's hilariously raw. You know these characters. You might be one. One thing is for sure, I have a new respect for postal workers. I can't wait to read more of Bukowski's work.

I was so disappointed in this book. I a big Borroughs & Sedaris fan, so when I read the rave reviews from others who enjoy the same type of writing I couldn't wait to read it. It was a quick 2-day read, but I thought the story was just sad.
