This writer has a beautiful whimsy to her writing that makes it seem like a continuing poem. This one in particular just seems like a continuing flow of descriptions. Of very simple elements.

I really struggled to get through the first 300 pages of this book. It is a set of stories revolving around a young Mexican-American girl and her family. Although most of the many Spanish words and phrases that dot the pages were translated, I still felt as though I was missing something. The story did not hold my interest until the end, when the girl is a teenager, and Cisernos cuts down on the lengthy descriptions.
