This book grabbed hold of my imagination from the first page, tied it to a thin red string, and dangled it, dancing in the wind, for every line afterward. Ladies, read this book! Hearts will break, and then soar through the clouds. Buy the ticket, and take the ride!

This one started slow, but it was good overall, and epic story over four generations, very old school, but I apprecaited the spirit aspect of it.

Not terribly interesting. I mean, I read most of it. But it's very depressing. By the third generation with nothing of pointed interest happening and the story gets even MORE depressing I gave up. Good luck to you if you want to try it. It's supposed to have a magical element to it. Whatever.

Brilliant, epic, otherworldly - Allende's tale of personal and political upheaval in an unnamed South American country, as told through the history of one of its most influential family is an even more essential read than "One Hundred Years of Solitude."

I think I actually like this book. I thought I would hate it because the story spans three generations of the Trueba family. However, even though the time span is so large, Allende does an excellent job of managing that time so the characters and events stay interesting. I really like the storytelling style of this book. The narrators talk about trivial but memorable events in their lives, like Uncle Marcos's flying contraption and Blanca's pottery classes for Mongoloids, and the important political events tearing the country apart just shine through, seemingly effortlessly. I think I'd like to read this in Spanish...

Next to Daughter of Fortune, this is my favorite Allende novel. It's scope is enormous, the tale magical and romantic, and left me breathless. In my opinion this is Allende's masterpiece.

A famous Chilean author, similar in style to "A hundred years of solitude." Interesting characters, but they are not always likable. It gives you a better understanding of Chilean history.
