This is the sequel to Chains, and Ashes finishes the trilogy. ”

This book was also very much about civil rights. The protagonist is Curzon Smith, a runaway slave who enlists in the Continental Army. The book tells of the frightening conditions of Valley Forge. It also brings to light the fact that our country was thick with racism early on. The unfair treatment of slaves is also highlighted in this book. After serving in the army for many months, Curzon is "reclaimed" by his old master who works for the Continental Congress. He works out many plans to escape but they all fail before they begin. He is also accompanied by a girl he is in love with. A fellow slave named Isabelle. Together they work out how to run away and after everything going awry they eventually make it out. This story is continued in the sequel Ashes. I enjoyed reading this book. I had always heard about the horrifying conditions for soldiers at Valley Forge but this gave me new understanding. This also reminded me that despite the great things our country did during its founding, we also did many shameful things, like continue to have slavery. This would be a great book to read in the classroom to raise awareness about the Revolutionary War and about Slavery/Civil Rights.”
