Lyrical, poetic, and very reminiscent of A.A. Milne. The characters are delightful and the story interesting. I can see why it's considered a classic.

This book was really good. For some reason, it made me feel happy. I don't know why.

This book is classic. So inoccent, so creative, so amazing, such a journey. Mabey it was because I needed a lighter novel after reading other books, mabey im partial to classics, but either way I fell in love with this book. It makes my heart hurt to think about it. When I am older I will read this to my kids. I will keep my copy in good condition forever. I am ready to read it again!

The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame

    1. What worked for me:
AAGGHH! Nothing! I wanted to add some classics to my list of children’s literature, but I should have chosen something else. This was the first time this semester that I truly felt I was reading a children’s book from beginning to end. It did not appeal to me at all.

    2. What didn’t work for me:
I’m not big on personification of animals, but thought I should give this book a chance since it is considered a classic and I remember how much I loved the Disney movie. Perhaps because of the time period during which this was written, or the fact that I couldn’t stop picturing the characters as animals, I was unable to relate. To me the characters are the most important things and they never became real for me.

    3. What 1 thing I’ll remember about this book a year from now:
Um…well what about how much I didn’t care for the book, but have such fond memories of the movie. Sometimes the movie really is better then the book!

The Wind in the Willows is a great book for grades 4-6. I would use it for independent reading. I think the action-filled plot and the on-going sequence of events keeps the reader constantly flipping the pages. Students are hooked on the book immediately when they are introduced to Toad and his mischievous personality. He makes the reader anticipate his every next move, and he entertains the reader with his obsession of motor vehicles and accidents. The Wind in the Willows is not only provides an enjoyable story for readers, but it also teaches them about friendship, hospitality, and change. Students learn what good friends do for each other, and they learn how to be a friend in return. I would recommend this book to all of my students as a great book for Silent Reading Time.
