“A tragic, but well written story.”

The movie complements the book nicely, but the book is about as well-done as can be. Introspective writing, great description of the neighborhoods, and a metronomic plot.”

It is kind of funny to me that I accidentally waited years to read this. I don't remember why I didn't see the movie when it first came out - just didn't get there perhaps, or was in the mood for a different kind of movie at the time. Either way, I know the basic idea without knowing who did it.
But I successfully protected myself from learning more about the story, and therefore the killed. It even came up in passing at Christmas and I asked no one to mention the killed, and everyone was all impressed that I had protected myself from this info for years so I could read the book. Didn't seem that strange to me - I guess I try to do that all the time. Read the book before I see a movie sometimes, even if it takes me a while to do them in the right order.
So then last fall I get into Lehane and pick this one up while on the library waiting list for the next Patrick and Angie book.
I am very impressed with Lehane - he covers a lot of ground in the book in terms of the people he is looking at. I would be super interested to figure out where he did his research - who did he study, or is it primarily from his own observations of people.
While the story is leading you to think one person committed the crime, you - or at least, me - are thinking, it can't be right - it is too obvious. But for the life of me, I didn't know who else it could have been until a few pages before the police figure it out. Looking back, all the clues were there but they didn't seem like clues. And you expected the things you were told to mean one thing, so you didn't look at what else they could have meant.
I would still like to see the movie - I know everyone's performance is incredible.”
“one of my all-time favorites!!!”
