i can't tolerate serial killer books especially ones who torture and dismember. if you can, it is well written and well thought out.”
“I finished this book last night after reading during every free minute for the last few days, and staying up too late last night finishing. Well, also not feeling like going to be due to the time change. But mostly determined to finish this book.
What is strange in many respects is that this book tells a pretty horrifying story. In reading Lehane, I have come to realize how tame most of the suspense books I read actually are. I love Robert B. Parker books; okay, really only the Spenser books. I have read all but the most recent Scarpetta book; she's an ME for heaven's sake.
But this book - graphic. You don't actually see most of the violence - most of it is discovered after the fact. But the main character does wrestle with the idea of violence in his life and how he accidentally brings it into the lives of those he loves.
But it is still a really well written book with characters you really care about. It starts off a few months after the majority of the story, including alluding to all these characters who are "gone." But you don't know if gone is dead or away and who might be which. I can't tell you how much I was scared throughout the book that some specific people might not be away.
As I have said before, I am determined to read Lehane's books in order. So even thought I saw the movie Gone, Baby, Gone I don't know how the story of Angie and Patrick evolve to that point. But I could make a few guesses - there is a line I think I remember from the beginning of the movie about how they don't do those kinds of investigations. If I remember that correctly, I could see a scenario where Angie and Patrick start doing repossessions or something after what happened in this book. Doing something that takes them away from the daily violence.
I have to also say before signing off - I totally figured out who did it way before anyone else did. I realize that in a book it is easier to make a guess and be right - for the most part, all of the choices of bad guys have been presented to you. However, I still totally got it right. And when they said he had an alibi, I did not believe it for a minute. ”
“loved it!”

Lehane used the conventions of detective fiction to rope me in and keep me on my toes while putting his own spin an all the goings on. There were still some things that came off cliche but Lehane makes a tired genre spring to life in his prose. Could have used a little less on the wisecracks though and the killer turned out to be pretty obvious to me. There really weren't that many plausable suspects. ”

Mr.LeHane also throws in some dry humor once and awhile...I really like the male and female characters in his stories they are pretty broken...This book is in my top 20 books....”

I love Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro and this is an excellent chapter in their history together. Perhaps a bit operatic on the bad guy at the end.”

What separates Dennis Lehane from most of his peers is that the man is a WRITER. While the plots are always strong and the mysteries are never predictable, areas mystery writers typically give short shrift to, like characterization and prose, are Lehane's true strengths. This is a genuinely scary book that I highly recommend to fans of the genre. Update: I just reread this book. It's actually amazing how crammed with ideas it is, with Lehane presenting a difficult but solveable mystery and a ton of memorable characters. If a better private eye book is written in the next twenty years, I'll be amazed. A classic. ”
