The cult aspect of the story was timely; the psychopathic pedophile was terrifying. I hope Heath is a recurring character.

    One of her better books.

Not the best Anna Pigeon novel in the bunch. As Anna starts a new job in Colorado, the action is fast and interesting. The mystery only starts when two children missing for months are found. However, the last section of the books drags on far to long as Anna fails time and time again to bring a killer in who is just a little too lucky to be believed. Every time she gets the upper hand, she makes a stupid mistake and loses her advantage. A gag could have saved 30 pages of frustration.

Not one of her better novels. Hey, one 3-star out of a bunch of 4's isn't at all bad.

This is the first book I've listened to in the Anna Pigeon series by Nevada Barr, and I am looking forward to more of them. The story and the characters were very engaging and well developed. The book is about 3 girls who went missing from the Rocky Mountain National Parks. Two of the girls turn up on Anna Pigeon's watch, and the ensuing investigation to find out what happened to them as well as to find the third girl leads to a twisted kidnapper and killer. The plot takes several turns that keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery.

First of all, on the positive side, Nevada Barr's characters are strong and complex. Many of their motives, emotions, and psychology are clear. Her female protagonists are really survivors despite what happens to them physically as well as sorting through their own personal life and conflicts. In this book, the author really draws you into what might happen when a child is kidnapped and forced to endure repeated abuse over a long period of time. The results are tragic and terrifying. On the other hand, while the details of the abuse, and the violence within this story are probably necessary to the plot and the understanding of the characters, I find Nevada Barr's books a bit too intense for my general tastes. I also find it a bit sad that her main characterm Anna Pigeon, seems to have lost her faith in most things good (although I think that many people would say that makes her a good, as in complex, character.) Th0se are the only reasons I dropped the rating by a star. Nevertheless, "Hard Truth" is one of the best books that I have read written by Nevada Barr. She really knows how to carry the suspense of her stories to the end.

This book was extremely disturbing. The detail in which the author went into about the horrific things that were done to children was too intense for me. Why print this type of book?

Yes, I could have stopped reading it. This was my first book of the author and I picked it up on one of those whims at the library and it's not until the end, when the deviant is being revealed that all the details spilled.

Finally, since I started this book in the spring, on and off, I got it done. So now I'm all set to request and reserve Winter Study next week. A great series, with a touch of realism of past events like from the Texas cult scandal, to everyday life. A good story.

Any book by Nevada Bahr is good, but the are sort of chronological (SP?) so you might want to try to find the first one first.
