My second Patchett book after the brilliant Bel Canto. A slow start but so much like grieving. I too am in love with her writing and understand a bit better I think how one could write oneself and be a successful writer as well.

Very nice. Complex human heart, love. Can't control who you fall in love with. And maybe not even understand why and what they give you that you need.

As usual, Ann Patchett just gets me. I loved Bel Canto, Run, and (a biography) Truth & Beauty, and she got me again with this one. She constantly warms my heart with wonderful characters that get thrown into a life changing experience, all associated with death, relationships, and the consequences. This one is no different. While Death is a difficult subject to deal with, Ann likes to bring people back using wonderful colorful loving language. She likes to explore how people deal with death and bring themselves back through surrounding themselves with memories and healing properties. In this story, the widow of a gay magician meets his family and lives again through their stories about them and discovers herself in the end. No spoilers here. It's just really lovely.

A lovely book. She gets the feeling of loss across just right. Her characters are well-drawn and unique, except for Parsifal. Everyone says how wonderful he was but he remained a cipher for me. Nonetheless, I thorougly enjoyed this. I didn't want it to end. I wanted to know what happened to al of them next. I missed the characters when the book was over. Grade: A-

I gave this book 4 stars because I loved the beginning. I liked the whole book except for the too-pat ending. I loved the main character and the dreams she had. Another book with AIDS and death. Lovely book; full of hope.

After working as his assistant for more than 20 years, Sabine marries her beloved boss, Parcifal, knowing that he's gay and has just lost his lover. What she doesn't find out until after his death is that Parcifal was actually Guy Fettera from Alliance, Neb., and had a family he never spoke about.
