This excellent novel is set in one of my favorite historical periods- the time just following the American Civil War, and features one of my favorite authors as a character- Herman Melville. Post-war New York is rendered with intense detail and the protagonist- a maimed Union sniper named Bartholomew is presented with the same clarity.
