Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers

by Mary Roach

An oddly compelling, often hilarious exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem.
For two thousand years, cadavers-some willingly, some unwittingly-have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of... (read more)

A curious book explaining what really happens when you donate your body to science...and how your decaying body can actually have more of a life after death...as a crash-test dummy, a med student cadaver, and many more...Mary Roach investigates the possibilities with respect while adding her cheeky wit and hilarious observations. Funny and informative at the same time. A must-read for med students, nurses, or anyone that will die in the future.

This book is a fascinating and, at times, irreverent look at all the things that cadavers do with their time. From impact studies and forensic science to physician instruction and mortuary science (and much more), the use of cadavers has a fascinating history that I never appreciated until I read this book. Great stuff--if you have a strong stomach.

And you thought death was boring!

What do you want to do with your death? Who knew we would still have such a wide variety of career choices? In Stiff, Mary Roach educates us on all the possibilities.

Interested in having plastic surgery? It costs the cadaver nothing!

Ever wanted to be a car crash test dummy? It's not too late!

Join law enforcement and commune with nature working on the infamous body farm.

Speaking of nature, how about giving back to the environment as compost? You can do it! No previous experience required!

All these and many more options await you in Stiff.

Written in a conversational tone for the layperson, Roach asks all the questions you would want to ask but would feel stupid doing so. She asks no matter how silly and, yes, in the end this makes for a very entertaining read!

Who would guess that a book about cadavers could be both interesting and funny. Roach is a talented author.

I just started this one and it is everything the critics say -- fascinating and fast-paced and really quite funny, but always respectful at the same time. I feel like Roach just happens to be a friend of mine who went on the coolest field trip and came back to delight and enlighten me with everything she learned...

    Read it!

A clever and in-depth look at what happens to our bodies after we die. In spite of the potential sensitivity of the subject matter, it's a funny and respectful look at bodily remains.

I read this after reading Mary Roach's most recent book, Bonk, and while I didn't find it as well written as Bonk, it was certainly interesting and informative. I would love to visit some of the places Mary visited, although I'm not sure I could stomach everything. I'm very interested in reading about Human composting and it's developments in the past few years!

An interesting, bizarre, and very well-researched read... though I felt Roach was a bit lopsided in her portrayal of some of the researchers. The guy doing cadaver research to determine the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin was a "whack," but the guy who sewed dog heads onto other still-living dogs wasn't?
