Worth the read alone just to find out that happens to bodies during an airplane crash. It left me spouting forensic facts to my husband who couldn't believe what I was saying. Mary Roach's disconnect with the sacred attachment we have with our bodies allows her to succinctly describe the "life" of cadavers and how they have been used throughout time to aid in noble causes. I still couldn't stop thinking about the barbaric methods that were used to make sure the bodies were dead in not so ancient times. I'll leave you with one hint: objects under the fingernails.

A fun and quirky read about the human body after death.

I read this book some years back when it first came out and from what I can remember this was a very good book. The way she describes the methods used to determine how a person has died is amazing. As I remember it the way she describes insects and the part they play in determining death was most interesting. I think I gave this book to my mom after I read it so I need to buy it again to re-read. It was a really good book about forensic cases. Those of you who like true crime reading and/or forensics then you will love this book. You really will not be able to put it down.

Mary Roach presents a fairly fascinating account of what happens to your body at the funeral home/morgue after you drop over. Having been previous employed in the deathcare industry, myself, I found this book amusing and enlightening.

This book, about dead people and the sorts of things that are done to them in the name of science and mourning, completes our own personal Mary Roach trifecta. It was an interesting book… I didn’t realize all the different things that can happen to your body if you donate it to science. She even travels to China in search of a crematorium that allegedly used cadavers for dumplings in a family restaurant. It is definitely on the gory side, so if hearing about guts and bugs and unpleasant biological functions isn’t your bag, you might want to skip it. But if you’re curious, Roach does an excellent job of making non-fiction interesting and entertaining.

What can't they do with a cadaver these days? This book was amazing- gently humorous, but never offensive. I look forward to other books by Mary Roach.

This book is wonderful to read, scientific and humorous. Who knew dead bodies made such wonderful contributions to our lives. I been going through aging parents with a number of friends and the authors explorations of alternatives to a traditional I found very thought provoking and deserving of more research.
