  • Bitterblue: The queen of Monsea and main protaganist of the story. She is approximately 18 years old, and has been ruling Monsea for 8 years. The daughter of King Leck and Queen Ashen. In the novel "Graceling" Ashen died in an effort to remove Bitterblue from the evil control of her father. After her father's death, Bitterblue became Queen.
  • Lady Katsa: Bitterblue's friend, and Po's girlfriend. Katsa helped Bitterblue escape her father's evil tyranny in the novel "Graceling". The founder of the Council. Graced with survival.
  • Prince Po: Prince Greening Grandemalion of Lienid, also known as Po, is Bitterblue's cousin and friend. He is the seventh son of King Ror. Po helped Bitterblue to escape her father in the novel "Graceling". Is widely thought to be Graced with hand fighting, but his real Grace is a secret known only to a few people.
  • Death: Bitterblue's librarian, whose name is pronounced to rhyme with "teeth". He is Graced with reading things inhumanly fast and memorizing everything he reads. He has a cat named Lovejoy.
  • Sapphire (Saf): A Monsean thief with purple eyes of different shades who grew up on a Lienid ship. His Grace is unknown. Close friends with Teddy, and brother to Bren.
  • Teddy: Saf's friend. Is a writer and printer in Bitterblue City.
  • Madlen: Bitterblue's Graced healer who lives and works in the castle. She has lost one eye.
  • Thiel: One of Bitterblue's advisors, who advised Leck during his reign. He is very close to Bitterblue and aided her and Ashen many times.
  • Darby: One of Bitterblue's advisors, who advised Leck during his reign. Graced with the ability to not require sleep.
  • Runnemood: One of Bitterblue's advisors, who advised Leck during his reign. Rood's brother. Described as being an attractive man who is good with words.
  • Rood: One of Bitterblue's advisors, who advised Leck during his reign. Runnemood's younger brother. Is described to have nervous episodes that cause his absence from work.
  • Prince Raffin: Katsa's cousin and Bitterblue's friend, the son of King Randa of the Middluns. Makes medicines with the assistance of Bann.
  • Bann: Raffin's frequent traveling companion and friend.
  • Lord Giddon: A Middluns lord involved in the council who is friends with Bitterblue, Po, and Katsa. Travels with Po doing the work of the council, yet has not been told about Po's secret. Becomes Bitterblue's friend and confidant.
  • Skye: One of Po's older brothers. Friends with Bitterblue, and one of the men that Thiel hopes that Bitterblue will marry. Skye is described as liking the company of men over women.
  • King Ror: Bitterblue's uncle and Po's father. He is the king of Lienid, and father to seven sons. Bitterblue often looks to him for advice on important matters.
  • Leck: Bitterblue's late father, who was Graced with the ability to speak words that everyone believed, even if they were lies. He was the king of Monsea with rule for 35 years. King Leck mistreated the citizens of Monsea, killing animals, making people disappear and burning books. Leck was killed by Katsa at the end of "Graceling".
  • Ashen: Bitterblue's late mother, who protected Bitterblue from Leck. Ashen is King Ror's of Leneid's sister, which also makes her Prince Po's Aunt. Leck killed her in 'Graceling'.
  • Holt: One of Bitterblue's guards. Graced with strength.
  • Hava: Bellamew's daughter, Holt's niece, Graced with disguise.
  • Bellamew: A female sculpture who created many works of art for Leck, but was greatly mistreated by him. Mother of Hava, sister of Holt.
  • Bren: Saf's sister, whom Teddy seems to have a crush on. Lives with Tilda, Teddy's sister, above the printer shop.
  • Tilda: Teddy's sister. Lives with Bren above the printer shop.
  • Jass: One of the people who works in castle kitchen, has a Grace of knowing what people want to eat by smelling their scent.
  • Fox: Servant of Bitterblue, eyes are two different shades of gray, Graced with fearlessness.
  • Helda: Bitterblue's housekeeper, ladyservant and spymaster. Helda was previously Lady Katsa's ladyservant, as read in the novel "Graceling", and sent to work for Bitterblue.
  • Spook: A female master thief in the east city, came from a line of thief family that has been robbing nobles for decades.
  • Lovejoy: Death's cat. also suffered from Leck's torture.
  • Danzhol: A Monsean lord. Graced with the ability to open his mouth as wide as his head. Did Leck's bidding for several years and eventually goes mad.
  • Smit: The captain of the Monsean guard.
  • Ivan: An engineer who worked for King Leck to design the three bridges in Leck City - Monster Bridge, Winged Bridge and Winter Bridge.
  • Anna: The head baker at Bitterblue's castle. A member of the council.
  • Ornik: The swordsmith at Bitterblue's castle. A member of the council.
  • Dyan: The head gardener at Bitterblue's castle. A member of the Council.
  • Arlend: Giddon's brother who died at 15
