This is the first book aspiring fiction writers should read. Period. The concept is really that essential to fiction writing.

Awesome! Helpful! Insightful! Don't read if you want to be able to watch any movie or read any book without analyzing it. It boils down all good works of fiction to a chart, which is great for writers, but would stink if you just like to lollygag blissfully through a story.

Goal, Motivation, Conflict - Deb Dixon Not much to say here. It's evident when you read this book, why the people in your local RWA chapter speak reverently of it. Very helpful book on how to get to know your story well enough to tell it. This is an easy read as well. Update - Get them at gryphon books for writers: http://www.gryphonbooksforwriters.com/home/gmc.htm
I also found a copy at the library. Did you know they let you BORROW books there? You don't even have to beg! They've even got people there who will go look for the book for you if you're an idiot like me and get lost in the reference section when you should be in adult non-fiction. Amazing...

If you're an aspiring novelist, this book is a must. Most books on writing I find hard to finish. But GMC has what I call "golden nuggets" in every single chapter. It's the best writing book I've read - bar none.
