We really live in an ignorant society when Shelfari has nothing but a generic cover for this book. It's one of the best top five American novels ever written, maybe top three. Loosely based on the life of Louisiana demagogue Huey P. Long, whose story would have attracted Sophocles, Shakespeare and Homer, it's more than a great American novel; it's a tale of how goodness can become corrupted. The opening pages are what great writing should be: immediate and concrete description that sets the tone for the novel, but that also sets up a metaphor that will run through the entire book, and that runs through most great books.

This is a very well wwritten novel that flows like poetry. Interesting be cause Willy is really, Huey Long, the governor of Louisiana.
The speeches are really enjoyable in here. Made into a great movie but the book is much stronger and better.
    A great read.

One of the best books I have read, basically the death of idealism at the hands of corrupt politics. I recommend reading it if you get the chance.
