We really live in an ignorant society when Shelfari has nothing but a generic cover for this book. It's one of the best top five American novels ever written, maybe top three. Loosely based on the life of Louisiana demagogue Huey P. Long, whose story would have attracted Sophocles, Shakespeare...

An amazing story followed by an incredible movie. An American classic of epic proportions...

Excellent complex book with universal themes.

Not bad; I've read worse, but I've read much better, too. For my tastes, Penn Warren wasted far too much ink waxing poetic in his descriptions of superfuous ojects. The story itself was only mildly interesting, and was not worth wading through all the author's attemtps at painting pictures with words. However, to be fair, I know many people who prefer that writing style, and All the King's Men is a modern classic, so my opinion is nothing more than one small opinion.

Good vocabulary and style, convoluted plot, which got lost in descriptive passage, akin to Lord of the Rings.

Long, but worth it. I'll probably read it again at some point. (The movie adaptation was pretty good, as well.)

Everyone seemed to enjoy this classic book about politics and politicians. Comments centered around the corrupting influence of power and the charisma of Willie Stark, the character based on Huey Long. The group's opinion was that the movie made in 1949 was a better match to the book than the 2006 version.
pros: incredible story and main character
cons: some didn't care for the writing style

This novel is not just about the rise and fall of a politician (and all the dirty business related to being a public servant) but also about discovery of family secrets, and how death often fails to redeem sins. The story and dialogues are very realistic, and I love Robert Penn Warren's analogy on stereoscopic vision, somewhere in the middle of the story. I can easily relate to the protagonist, and I can feel him in his love/hate dealings with the Boss, the Wife, the Mistress, the Judge(the Father), and even the Assassin. Cool...
