Historical Romance June 1st, 2009
4 stars
I loved 'A Hint of Wicked' by up and coming author Jennifer Haymore.
Haymore's writing is clean and crisp. Her book was easy to read and hard to put
down.
The thing that I enjoyed most about the novel were the likeable characters. The story has all the conflict and angst a reader could want. It is a twist on a classic love triangle story. Sophie first husband disappeared and was presumed dead after years of hopeless waiting years she finally decides to go on living. And discovers a new and different kind of love with her best friend Tristan. But suddenly Garrett returns and he is wants his wife back. Sophie has a tough decision to make. It's such a good story. Because there is so much to like about both men, I am sure that some will be disappointed by Sophie's choice. I, however, loved the ending and felt that she did end up with the right man.
This story was so intense because you will love both the heroes and Sophie’s decision is a rough one. I'm looking forward to her next book, which is supposed to be about the man Sophie didn't pick!

Read 2/3rds and got tired of the love triangle but mostly identified too much with the damaged husband who I knew was going to lose. Possibly I will finish this someday especially after I read the next book featuring the loser of this love triangle. I enjoyed all the characters but felt an overwhelming sense of sadness. This author has a lot of talent - i will continue to follow her.

“OK, it started from page 18 and I was hooked. I know I took forever and 300 days to read this book, but you have to forgive me. Well you don't but if you do, then GOOD! This book was an excellent source of love, forgiveness, hope and determination. Jennifer Haymore has a hit on her hands with this book and will continue to have a hit on her hands with her books that are coming in the near future. I am not going in to depth as far with this review as I do most, only because I gave a half review of this one back on 6/6/09.
Jennifer, you gave me a wonderful read, and a hope for lusty romantic LOVE and happily ever after. Continue on the road that you have paved for yourself and you will become more than the next Nora Roberts, or Danielle Steele. You will be THE Jennifer Haymore that everyone will want to be! Congrats and Kudos to you!

“So the heroine drives me nuts she gets three happily-ever-afters: her first marriage before he is lost to the war, her second marriage where he helps heal her heart before the first husband returns and then her final marriage (same husband but still!) I realized that true love triangles seriously hurt my heart!!”

I won it in a competition and got to start reading it before it was even released. It was a good romp that kept me engrossed until the end and wasn't too corny. ”

After eight years of heartbreak and fruitless searching, Garrett is declared dead and Sophie finally starts to rebuild her life with Tristan. She finds love again, remarries and starts to heal -- and then Garrett returns.
One woman, two husbands. And Sophie truly loves them both. How can you not want to read every word to find out how this dilemma can be resolved? This is the sort of emotionally charged scenario that only masters such as Julia Quinn and Lavyrle Spencer dare to attempt, yet Jennifer Haymore takes this on in her New York debut.
None of this would work if you didn't believe in the emotions and Ms. Haymore handles them beautifully. You yearn for what Sophie and Tristan and Garrett have lost, you'll cry for them. This is not an easy emotional journey and at times, you may wonder how this can all work out. When Sophie says, "I want them both", it's not out of selfishness, but out of a deep connection with Garrett, the first love of her youth as well as with Tristan, the new love she's discovered after the years of pain and loss.
I loved this book for how fearless A Hint of Wicked is in delving deep into the difficult decisions people have to make. Then, on top of that, it's wonderfully plotted, fits in perfectly with its time period and creates such a sensual and intimate mood that I had to give a deep sigh when it was all over.
I have often wondered a book generates a buzz prior to its release. In this case, the attention is well deserved. I'd read the follow up novel, A Touch of Scandal, today if someone were to put it in my greedy little hands. ”
