It's been about 20 years since I drove through this area of the country and I remember thinking at the time that I am not tough enough to survive this place mentally or physically. I felt transported to this locale by Annie Proulx and know that I would not be able to live in Woolybucket for any length of time. It took me four or five chapters to really get hooked on the story and after that I wanted to find out if the hog farms would prevail.

Another great one from Annie Proulx. The research she puts in is obvious.

Strong, lucid prose; wonderful character development, but slow plot movement that, in the end, felt contrived. The end is a little too tidy to be believable. I felt the characters were more believable than the plot.

I didn't find this outing up to her usual level of excellence. It felt like a bunch short stories cobbled together so she didn't have to give the advance back.

Annie Proulx has a way of capturing small town America and that sense of belonging we all search for so beautifully. I fall in love with her characters and I want to move to the towns she creates in her books. No matter how downtrodden they may appear to outsiders, Proulxs' communities are rich in life and love under the surface.

The characters and setting is McMurtryesque. I found it to be very entertaining

This book grew on me as the story progressed. I also liked the thread regarding heritage and development changing the landscape. The characters are very colourful and have a fullness and complexity to them that I enjoyed. Overall I quite enjoyed it and would recommend it.
