Snow Falling on Cedars is a beautifully atmospheric love story/murder mystery. It takes place on San Piedro Island off the Pacific Coast. good mystery, well written with lots of detail about fishing, the Internment, WWII, and island life. My impression is that an editor got to Guterson and told him to spike up the love scenes -- they're unnatural and lugubrious, not his voice at all.

I really liked this book. The descriptions were good, the emotions were strong, and the plot was interesting. I thought it could've used more events or stuff about Hatsue's and Ishmal's love or even the murder itself. The book could've focused more on Carl Heine's family instead of Ishmal and Hatsue. I liked the murder mystery and the prejudice that came with it. The murder ended like I thought it would, but overall, I enjoyed it a lot.
