For Dr. David Beck, the loss was shattering. And every day for the past eight years, he has relived the horror of what happened. The gleaming lake. The pale moonlight. The piercing screams. The night his wife was taken. The last night he saw her alive. Everyone tells him it’s time to move... read more
“I also know that flirting with alcoholism is about as safe as flirting with a mobster's underage daughter.”

I’m not above making quick judgments based on appearance—or, to use a more politically current term, racial profiling. We all do it. If you cross the street to avoid a gang of black teens, you’re racial profiling; if you don’t cross because you’re afraid you’ll look like a racist, you’re racial profiling; if you see the gang and think nothing whatsoever, you’re from some planet I’ve never visited.Highlighted by 6 Kindle customers

Here is the truth about tragedy: It’s good for the soul. The fact is, I’m a better person because of the deaths. If every cloud has a silver lining, this one is admittedly pretty flimsy. But there it is. That doesn’t mean it’s worth it or an even trade or anything like that, but I know I’m a better man than I used to be. I have a finer sense of what’s important. I have a keener understanding of people’s pain.Highlighted by 3 Kindle customers
I'm 15 myself, so I can't really justify putting it in the "adult" category. It has sexual themes portrayed in a blasé manner, and has some rather gruesome undertones. It is an excellent novel for a mature reader. Parents, just show some discretion!
