So this book is set in the near future where society is rapidly collapsing--it's sort of dystopic, and the main character is a headstrong teenage girl named Lauren who believes Change is the only god there is. She suffers from a congenital condition caused by her mother's use of an experimental...

This is my first time reading Octavia E. Butler and it will most likely be the last; I was coerced to read this novel for one of my classes in college—unfortunately. The book falls flat and is more bland than anything else. The writing style is as follows: cause and effect, cause and effect,...

This book drew me in from the first few pages. Parable is a wonderful journey for the reader.

Whoa! Read it for a class and it was not what I was expecting it to be. Travel along the post apocalyptic roads that now makeup the broken U.S. with Lauren, a young girl who in the face of tragedy, is able to determine what (or who) god really is.

I really enjoyed this book it was a great read. I loved the entire story, I think that some of the ideas of her "religion" were flawed but it was a great story.

This is my first time reading Octavia E. Butler and it will most likely be the last; I was coerced to read this novel for one of my classes in college—unfortunately. The book falls flat and is more bland than anything else. The writing style is as follows: cause and effect, cause and effect, cause and effect. It is uninteresting and uninspiring; also, the main character, Lauren, her religion or silly “philosophy” is weak and has more of a floating affect than something that is concrete. All through the book she mumbles: “God is change”, but Butler does not even attempt to go any further. I fail to realize what Lauren actually meant: oh, and the ending is horrible. Do not read this book: it's a slow read and boring.

If you want to envision the future and what the church should be, then read this book.

Lauren lives in a walled community in 2024. Outside the walls murder and mayhem reign. In her reflections about the unstable world around her she develops a religion she calls Earthseed. With Change as her God, she is more prepared than most when the drug addled pyro’s break through the wall burning and killing everything at hand. With her family dead, Lauren begins the trek north with dreams of starting her Earthseed community in hopes for a better future—if she survives. Her strength rallies others to believe a future might be possible. The award winning author’s science fiction tale of a world gone mad is a survival story where water and food are scare, but murder and rape abound. This unsensationalized look at a possible future is scary because it rings true. Recommended.

I loved this book and read it more than once. The imagery though graphic is honest and real and its a powerful book, are you sure you can handle it.

I devoured Kindred so I was somewhat disappointed when I read thisone--I simply lacked the emotional connection with Parable. Butler still offers a compelling female lead and a subtle commentary about humanity and the societies we create. It's worth some of your time.

I absolutely could not put this book down. It was so surreal and yet every word I read I could see it happening for real. This book made me want to bury money in the yard...
