Parable of the Sower" this was my first outing with Octavia Butler. Great story, neat and lean, well researched. I've never really been into Science Fiction but I plan on reading the rest of her work.
Parable of the Sower is a fancy house, ipod, SUV, stripped down version of California today. I have lived in the state most of my life, which doesn't make me an authority, but... slavery exist within the walls of every jail and prison we've made in this state in the last 40 years, if you don't believe prison and jail equals slavery please read the 13th amendment. Crack cocaine hit California hard ten years back and the effect on it's babies can be found in various forms within the California school system we are second to last on the list of academic achievement nation wide. For 10 years straight I had a better chance of surving daily in Iraq then in Los Angeles county, because of gang conflict to my neighbor, walking to school was a freakin Oydessy. So basically what I am saying is her story is today not in my opinion what could happen but everything happening. Take away your fancy home, your car, your IPOD and your false sense of security and what's left. If you currently live in California look at your latest gas bill and the increase in the last three months, then compare it to the water prices in Parable of the Sower and tell me the difference. This story didn't scare me at all, what scares me is the future. With regard to religion, I admire what she has written, California has always been known for accepting new religions, so Lauren's Earthseed doctrine comes off as realistic. Now if I could only figure out if I should introduce my daughter to this book at 13? She's smart, interacial, and living in Oklahoma. I wonder if Octavia's characters are a good starting place for teaching her some of the things I think she should know, without forcing her to one side of her being.

Every single time I read this book, and I've lost count now, I come to disklike Lauren more. She remains, however, a meaningful model for mindfulness, preparation, skill, survival and so on.
