According to Wikipedia, a book in the Jack Reacher series sells every second. "Without Fail" is a great indication of why. It's a Secret Service procedural that works because clues and working theories are presented skillfully, with a deft enough touch that if you focus you can pick up on them and draw inferences about the assassins. There's no superhuman deductive magic, just competing profiles that evolve and are proven or disproven over time. The book is simultaneously well-written...

This books misleads you into believing there's an international conspiracy going on. Only for it to end up being two local low-life crooked cops seeking a revenge of ages gone by. And what's more the crime is witnessing their humiliation. Stupid book! Put me off Lee Child.
