Rant: The Oral History of Buster Casey

by Chuck Palahniuk

“Like most people I didn’t meet Rant Casey until after he was dead. That’s how it works for most celebrities: After they croak, their circle of friends just explodes.…”

Rant is the mind-bending new novel from Chuck Palahniuk, the literary provocateur responsible for such books as the generation-defining classic Fight Club and the... (read more)

I was getting close to giving up on Palahniuk, but then I read this book. It revives what I loved about him in the first place; his creativity, uniqueness and unpredictability.

If nothing else, another original approach to storytelling by Palahniuk. The interviews in the middle seemed to slow somewhat, but by the time the 'hook' is set near the last third, the book smoothly sails to the end.

At first the format took some getting used to. The middle did drag a little but the end drew me back in. I found myself reflecting back on this books for weeks after reading it. Usually a sign of a good book to me, if it gets my brain stirred up for a while afterwards.

Quite amazing. Once I got used to bouncing around from narrator to narrator I became very quickly fascinated in the extraordinary life of Rant Casey. Rant is a very appealing but unlikely anti hero. His family, friends and associates, plus a few people who are studying him piece together his story and it's a doozy! They live in a future society where the population is so large it is divided into Daytimers and Nighttimers and never the twain shall meet. A popular Nighttimer 'sport' called part crashing entails crazy themed driving 'games' in which the object is to crash into as many other party crashers as possible. This plot line was enough to keep me interested but about three quarters of the way through time travel is introduced and then it becomes really odd!

This was a big disappointment. I was intrigued at the creative format at first, but it begins to drag in the middle. I couldn't finish it in the end and don't really want to.

The content is very graphic & looks to be written with the sole purpose of trying to shock readers rather than just tell a story.

I enjoyed a good amount of this book. While I haven't read enough Palahniuk to say whether this is a great example of his work or not, I found Rant intriguingly twisted. The posthumous oral biography was an interesting method of delivery to a story that becomes even more demented as it progresses (yes, it is possible). My major gripe with the book had to be the attempts to shock the reader.

It was unnecessarily disgusting in quite a few places, even for Palahniuk- which is saying quite a bit. I have no problem with shock appeal and graphic content, but some parts of Rant's history seemed like literary "Nappy-headed ho's": after a certain point, you feel the author is just trying too hard. The book is already surreal enough, really.

This book is a new idea that the author always tends to create. Chuck Palaniuk is so talented, and comes up with such a quirky bunch of characters.

I love the loops that this book goes through to connect the many stories/subplots. Graphic, but easier to read than Haunted.
