When Ms. Olinski chooses Nadia, Noah, Ethan, and Julian to be members of the Sixth Grade Academic Team magic happens. After being invited to a tea party every Saturday at 4pm, the students go an adventures together that include not only participating in their competitions but saving sea turtles and taking special calligraphy lessons.
This is a great story that uses flashbacks as well as follows multiple characters, so I would recommend it to 5th through 8th grade.
the characters take a wonderful journey through the story and you could create a map of their travels on Google Earth. They also spend a lot of time with the sea turtles so it would accompany a science unit or non-fiction unit. Cooperation and friendship are themes throughout this book. The characters in this study rely on each other in order to succeed. Students could identify parts where the characters help each other and how this helped the group as a whole to be successful. They could also relate this lesson to group sports, class activities, and family situations.

Newbery medal winner--A sixth grade academic bowl team comes together and works so well together that they beat the other sixth grade teams easily. The sixth grade team may have a chance to beat the seventh grade team at the academic bowl.

The story of an unlikely group of four students who have been select to participate in a Sixth grade Academic Bowl. The four students are chosen by their teacher Ms. Olinski. The team calls themselves The Souls. The Souls or rather, Noah, Nadia, Ethan and Julian are four students are connected to each other by more than just the Academic Bowl. From weddings, to saving sea turtles to afternoon teas complete with proper manners to calligraphy lessons sprinkled with a little magic this story is a wonderful journey for the reader as well as the story characters.
    Connections
Students could learn or be exposed to calligraphy and perhaps have a classroom afternoon tea. Also the classroom could draw a map of where the story travels. The book spends several chapters on sea turtles students can research and determine if the book gave an accurate description of how the eggs and young hatchlings were saved.
Cooperation and friendship are themes throughout this book. Each character relies on another character to be successful. Students may find it interesting to chart different parts where the characters help each other and how this was important for the group as a whole to be successful.

I must say that the beginning started off a little boring, but towards the middle I could not put the book down!

This book really made our class think. It is challenging for fifth grade. We learned to be ourselves, use team work, and give others a chance. Differences compliment each other. Some liked the use of flashback to build layers to the story, others were confused by it.
