- Kalam: A former Claw assassin, more recently of the Bridgeburners.
- Fiddler: A sapper. Formerly of the Bridgeburners.
- Felisin: Sister of Ganoes Paran (from the first novel) and of Adjunct Tavore.
- Duiker: Imperial historian. Former soldier.
- Mappo: A Trell warrior, companion of the immortal wanderer, Icarium.
- Icarium: An immortal, mixed blood Jaghut wanderer. A warrior, and also a maker of devices that measure the passage of time. (Such as the one in Darujistan in the first book.)
First Sentence
